I usually become deeply immersed in the Olympic Games. Having the honor of attending the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal as a Hostess for the AAU was pivotal. The experience opened my eyes to global diversity, performance excellence and the power of the human spirit (and body) to overcome the odds in myriad ways—all live, up close and personal.
I was particularly inspired at the Opening Ceremonies as each country’s contingent of athletes marched into the stadium; country flag proudly held, unique and colorful cultural attire, and broad smiles of pride, humility and awe! Mesmerized by the rich range of ebony, copper and crème skin tones of the Cuban and Brazilian teams in particular, I later realized I was witnessing the African Diaspora…along with the pride of representing homeland roots branching to all parts of the world.
Fast forward to 1984, when I lived in Nairobi and watched the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, televised by BBC. BBC introduced me to events about which I knew little to nothing…individual and team sports such as archery, fencing, rowing, synchronized swimming, plus the range of equestrian events.
As I view the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, I do so with mixed feelings. For me the corporate overlay and commercialism is unsettling. Yet I appreciate insights into the journeys of the athletes; their stories of sacrifice, discipline, fortitude and endless practice coupled with powerful demonstrations of courage, singular focus and diplomacy under immense pressure. They truly inspire us all.
To excel in any human endeavor requires qualities that Olympic athletes embody and exemplify, qualities that will endure long after their athletic careers. 5 of these qualities include:
- Belief in yourself and trust in your coach
- Unshakable faith – keeping your eye on the prize
- Endurance & Stamina – staying the course of practice, practice, practice
- Humility – keeping your ego in check regardless of media views
- Resilience – the capacity to keep coming back no matter what
- Do you have the mindset of an Olympian?
- What qualities do you seek to develop?
- How might you strengthen your pursuit of the goal, or gold?
In Part II, we’ll explore ways to apply the Olympian Mindset to our work in the world.
I love your blog on the Olympian Mindset! So applicable to many situations in our life at the moment! I will pass this on to my clients – Thank you very much!
with Love, Peace and Joy ~
