To excel in any human endeavor requires qualities that Olympic athletes embody and exemplify, qualities that will endure long after their athletic careers. What are these qualities and how do you apply an Olympian mindset to your work in the world?
Belief in Yourself – Belief in your Vision – Having a vision that represents the bigger “Why” is essential. Why am I engaged in this career or business? Why am I contributing my talents, skills, and gifts? What is the legacy of contribution I’m creating and toward what end? That bigger “Why” fuels and informs your intentions and goals, your programs and products. That bigger “Why” gets you back on purpose when you’re distracted or discouraged.
What is the bigger “Why” in the work that you do?
Unshakable Faith – Keeping Your Eye on the Prize – Learning and applying the lessons of the journey is important. You’re overlooked for a promotion; your sales fall short of the mark; an unexpected setback knocks you down. Yet, you seek to understand these or similar “setbacks” as “set-ups” for “come-backs”. You allow your unwavering faith and belief in yourself to keep you focused and moving forward, regardless of appearances.
How can you turn a stumbling block into a stepping stone?
Endurance and Stamina – Staying the Course – Endurance and stamina are fueled by focus, commitment, and determination. This requires discipline; discipline to invest in training, establish priorities, make follow-up calls, take decisive action, carry out or delegate the right tasks, engage the team…Celebrate the milestones accomplished while keeping the end in view….Taking the first step, jump, dive, hurdle, stroke, and then the next, always building your strength and stamina for the bigger “Why”.
In what ways must you be more disciplined to build your mental, spiritual and physical endurance?
Humility – Keeping Your Ego in Check – When you’re on a mission in your career or business, striving to excel, make a contribution and a positive difference, you attract supporters and haters. You attract those who will build you up with recognition and praise and those who will ignore or criticize you. They will inflate or deflate you. This is when humility helps…the capacity to be grateful, humble and prayerful, knowing that your cause and your mission are fulfilling a larger purpose and answering a bigger “Why”.
Can you be humble when the going is good and when it’s tough?
Resilience – Capacity to Keep Coming Back – Many Olympians have practiced for years, some since early childhood, fighting their way through sacrifices, injuries, losses, myriad challenges that have ultimately made them stronger, more determined and committed. As executives, entrepreneurs, advocates, and artists, we must also cultivate our capacity to keep coming back, turning adversity to achievement, tragedy to triumph.
What is the legacy that you’re creating?
Vision, faith, endurance, humility, and resilience are essential mindset qualities among many more that build character, expertise, and resources to excel and prosper while sharing our gifts to empower and uplift those you serve and to make a difference in the world.
