A Matter of Perspective

Events of recent months have “awakened” many people. Citizens of this country and the world have responded with a gamut of emotions; fear, anger, shame, depression and more, leading to diverse means of resistance and even inspired action. Some actions include signing online petitions, starting Meet-Ups, donating funds, joining organizations such as the Legal Defense Fund, ACLU, Natural Resources Defense Fund, Sierra Club, NARAL Pro-Choice America, as well as participating in protest rallies, making phone calls to elected officials or government entities and community organizing to position worthy (democratic) candidates to win in 2018.

Once “awakened”, it is impossible to go back to sleep, remain passive or complacent. Not a day passes without mention of the most recent affront, abuse or assault to human rights, the Constitution, the law…Therefore, we must be proactive rather than reactive, remain united, vigilant and vocal.

Since participating in the Women’s March in Oakland, I’ve sought meaningful ways to build on the love, camaraderie, joy, good vibrations and sense of global solidarity that we experienced during the march. I’ve also noticed the language of some Senators and Congresspersons. Fight for, fight against, or fight with. I find myself flinching at the energy of “fighting”. I think of how Gandhi and King galvanized thousands as proponents of non-violent protest. I remember the heroes and sheros of the Civil Rights and Anti-Apartheid Movements, who sought fundamental change, not without deadly sacrifices, but nonetheless progressed towards it. Now, the Water Protectors at Standing Rock, peacefully protecting their sacred lands and clean water.

What does it mean to “fight” with love, forgiveness, compassion?

What does it mean to “fight” by demonstrating heartfelt solidarity with those directly and harshly affected by inhumane edicts?

What does it mean to “fight” by withdrawing funds from banks, corporations or other entities representing greed or supporting corruption?

What does it mean to “fight” with prayer?

Admittedly earlier this year, and it was difficult, I chose to bless our current President, not to condone his beliefs, choices or actions, but rather to send positive energy and high vibrations to the White House. Can I continue to do so?

Whatever your spiritual practice, lean on it, call on it, be on it. Allow it to anchor and energize you. Allow it to keep you on the High Road of Love, Integrity, Justice, Respect, and the Peace you are and want for all in the world.
