From Chinese Philosophy, most Westerners have heard of the concept of yin and yang, literally meaning dark and light. Translations of Yin are feminine, passive, negative principle in nature; the moon; sunset; earth, right, matter; shaded orientation; north or shady side of hill; south of a river. Translations of Yang are positive, active, male principle in nature; the sun; sunrise; heaven; left, energy; south or sunny side of a hill; north of a river.
Yin and Yang is also one of the fundamental concepts in Traditional Chinese Medicine as it is the foundation of diagnosis and treatment. The four main aspects of yin and yang relationship are:
- Yin-Yang are opposites
- Interdependent – Cannot exist without each other
- Mutual consumption of Yin and Yang – harmonious change for balance
- Inter-transformation of Yin and Yang – one can change into the other only when the time is right
The themes of creativity viewed as more feminine and vision contextualized as more masculine motivated me to explore ways to balance the opposite, yet complementary and inter-dependent energies or qualities of Yin and Yang.
- In what area of your life are you seeking greater balance?
- How can you express more creativity in your relationships?
- What is your vision for the second half of 2012?
As individual women and men, we each possess qualities perceived as feminine and masculine. We tend to express one more than the other and tend to function predominately with one or the other.
This holds true culturally, ecologically and socially as well. For example we see ongoing Yin and Yang energies in 2012 prophecies in our environment; dramatic climate change and weather conditions, breakdowns in our governments, economies, all levels of society, etc. Thus, the question: Where are we out of balance? What must we do to restore balance?
