Honoring Harriet Tubman as a Leader

by | Feb 28, 2015 | Inspire, Lifestyle, Women

March is Women’s History Month and March 8 is International Women’s Day. The International Women’s Day 2015 theme is Make It Happen. Make It Happen is certainly a powerful Call to Action!

As I reflect on women in history who embodied the Make It Happen spirit, Harriet Tubman, well-known Conductor on the Underground Railroad comes to mind. After escaping slavery in 1849, she returned to the South 19 times beginning in 1850, and freed approximately 300 people from the bondage of slavery, including members of her family. During the Civil War, she served as a nurse, scout and sometime-spy for the Union army, mainly in South Carolina.

harriet-tubman_s640x780Harriet Tubman was an empowered leader, who has always been a spiritual guide and role model for me. She embodied vision, courage, faith, wisdom, resilience and more…with an unwavering commitment to her purpose.

Clearly Harriet Tubman was able to Make It Happen in co-creation, cooperation and collaboration with others through the Underground Railroad, a secret series of houses, tunnels and roads set up by abolitionists and former slaves. Her strong faith and trust in God was a key factor in the fulfillment of her purpose.

As you reflect on your own work and contributions to help others overcome the challenges of contemporary times, in what ways are you:

  • Standing in your natural power
  • Sharing your gifts and talents
  • Shining your light

to lead others to live their highest potential… and Make It Happen.  What is your Call to Action?

Harriet Tubman ElderEvery great dream begins with a dreamer.  Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.”
~ Harriet Tubman
