Kwanzaa for a Time As This!

by | Dec 26, 2014 | Evolution, Inspire, Lifestyle

I was among the early proponents and practitioners of Kwanzaa in the late ‘60’s. Each night of Kwanzaa between December 26 and January 1, we would celebrate the Principle of the day. Often attired in African garb, bringing food to share, reverent and revolutionary kwanzaain our interpretation of the rituals, we gathered. At the end of each evening’s celebration and fellowship, we were eager to hear where the next day’s Principle would be celebrated, feeling deep pride and connection through our African cultural heritage.

Seven Principles of Kwanzaa (Nguzo Saba)

Umoja – Unity

Kujichagulia – Self-Determination

Ujima – Collective Work & Responsibility

Ujamaa – Cooperative Economics

Nia – Purpose

Kuumba – Creativity

Imani – Faith

Almost 50 years after the inception of Kwanzaa, it feels more vital and urgent that we live the Principles of Kwanza daily in every aspect of our lives, individually and collectively. It is more vital and urgent that we:

  • Re-affirm our commitment to family and community
  • Re-enforce our cultural heritage, particularly the values of self-respect
  • Respect, appreciate and celebrate our children, elders and ancestors
  • Re-commit to supporting our local businesses, our schools and community institutions
  • Respect Mother Earth by being conscious stewards of her resources

-How are you demonstrating unity or self-determination?

-In what ways are you expressing your creativity?

-How are you cultivating your faith?

-In what ways are you living your purpose?

Again, I welcome the opportunity to be renewed in these principles and practices of right living. I invite you to contemplate the ways that you are living these principles as you reflect on the lessons and blessings of this year and set your intentions and priorities for the New Year.
