Mastering Mindset to Manage Stress – Part II

by | May 1, 2014 | Inspire, Lifestyle

In Part 1, I highlighted two powerful tips:

  1. Release worry about what you can’t control, such as technology, the traffic or your boss.
  1. Accept change as a positive opportunity, not as a threat. Look for the good in it.

Now let’s elaborate on two additional mindset shifts that will help you manage stress more effectively.

  1. Maintain healthy boundaries by learning when and how to say “No”, “No thank you”, or “no, not at this time,” without guilt, shame or apology.

For example, when you have priorities and deadlines that you’ve established for yourself, and are important for you to meet, it’s OK to maintain your focus and not allow someone else’s agenda to become a distraction or disruption. Ultimately you want to avoid a build-up of anger, resentment or disappointment within yourself, trying to please someone else at the expense of handling your priorities in a timely, resourceful way.

“I choose to maintain balance, flow and well-being by staying in my lane.”

When you learn how to maintain healthy boundaries, you will gain greater self-respect and the respect of your colleagues, plus maintain your BodyMindSpirit health and well-being.

  1. Rather than taking life so seriously, lighten up, feel the joy and learn to laugh at yourself.

minful walking on beachFor example, when you’re feeling uptight, pressured or stressed out, go for a walk in nature, get a massage or go to a comedy club. Go play. I like to hula hoop—that definitely keeps my laughing. Laughter is the best medicine you can give yourself and its free!

“This too shall pass, so let me find joy and peace in this moment.”

An affirmation such as the one above is simply a tool to shift your thinking.  An empowering thought or attitude generates a different behavior and a new result.

It’s difficult to change your mindset overnight or sustain new ways of thinking without reinforcement or support. Consistency and community helps. Although affirmations are a helpful tool, true mastery of your mindset means uprooting negative and false beliefs programmed from childhood that are still influencing your thoughts, words and actions, then replacing that disempowering programming with BodyMindSpirit Self-Care Practices that keep you aligned, balanced and in the flow.
