Moving Through the Final Weeks of 2021…

by | Oct 22, 2021 | Lifestyle, Women

As we move through the final weeks of 2021, its an ideal time to assess wins, challenges, lessons and more.

  • How do you feel about your progress thus far?
  • What commitments remain to be completed or re-assessed?
  • In what ways are you celebrating your harvest (wins)?

Although Autumn in the West is quite different from the bold rich contrasts of nature in the Eastern USA, we are experiencing cooler temperatures, shorter daylight hours and finally rains in Northern California.

We’re also preparing for Día de los Muertos/Day of the Dead, a holiday celebrated on the 1st and 2nd of November. It originated and is mostly observed in Mexico but also in other places, especially by people of Mexican heritage. In Oakland, it’s been celebrated for over 25 years in the Fruitvale District with music, dance, festive booths… I’ve gone frequently, and several years ago installed an altar, ofrenda, to honor my mother. Although associated with the Catholic celebrations of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, it’s a holiday of joyful celebration, that includes parades, ofrendas and visits to cemeteries. The multi-day holiday involves family and friends gathering to pay respects and to remember friends and family members who have died.

  • Who would you like to honor at this time of ancestral reverence?
  • How do you celebrate/remember your loved ones who’ve passed?
  • In your community, have you seen spontaneous altars set up where a person or persons have passed away?

“The truth is that with a clear vision, shared values and conscious action, a small group of committed individuals working together can transform the world; one family, one school, one business, one neighborhood, one city, one state and one region at a time, until a vibrant network of love, peace and justice envelops and sustains Mother Earth.” -Harriet Tubman Wright
